  • VENUES & HOST CITY

Malmö Arena is centrally located in the Öresund region, also known as Greater Copenhagen, and in the expansive district of Hyllie, which aims to be the most environmentally friendly district in the Öresund region. At Hyllie Stationstorg, the heart of the green district, lies Malmö Arena – only 80 meters from the train station, from where you reach the city center of Malmö in 3 minutes, Copenhagen Airport in 12 minutes and Copenhagen city center in 25 minutes. Malmö Arena opened in November 2008 and has a capacity for 12 600 spectators. It is a multi-arena and has hosted widely different events such as the Eurovision Song Contest, the Junior Hockey World Championships, and the Handball World Championships.

The Baltic hall is a historical venue, newly upgraded, with 3600 seats. It is located at Malmö Sports Complex, which is one of Europe’s largest city sports areas. The city’s expansion gives the feeling that Malmö is built around the Sport Venue District. The Baltic hall is a flexible arena that opened its doors in 1964. The arena is used for events in floorball, handball, basketball, boxing, and tennis. During the years the Baltic hall has hosted the World Floorball Championships, Davis Cup (World Cup in Tennis), the World Handball Championships, and the European Women’s Handball Championships. The venue also played an important role during Special Olympics 2022.

Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden with a population of approximately 330,000. Malmö is part of the Greater Copenhagen – a metropolitan region centered around the Öresund strait with Malmö and Copenhagen on either side, connected by the Öresund Bridge. 4 million people live in the Öresund region.

Malmö is a city small enough for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, yet big enough to boast a big city’s cultural life and attractions. Here you will find Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance castle within walking distance from Santiago Calatrava’s twisted skyscraper, the Turning Torso.

Malmö is the city of contrasts, where picturesque squares and cobbled streets give a timeless impression, while trendy shopping, relaxed residents and flourishing art and music scenes speak for a young and vibrant city full of curiosity. Malmö is also an event destination with famous events and artists. For two years in a row, Malmö has been awarded Sweden’s best sporting city.

  • SUSTAINABILITY

The WFC 2024 has high ambitions when it comes to sustainability, at all levels – socially, environmentally, and economically. We are working towards making the championships a “Certified Sustainable Event”. This means that we will quality-assure the work, not only linked to environmental/ecological impact but also in relation to the other dimensions of sustainability, i.e. social and economic. Read more about the sustainability work of WFC 2024 in our Sustainability Policy.

As a part of our sustainability work, the WFC 2024 participates in the GAMES project. This is an EU project which, among other things, aims to raise awareness and increase the adoption of climate change mitigation practices by key sports actors.

In addition, there is much you as a visitor can do to contribute to the sustainability of the event – for instance:

    • Travel by public transport: Did you know that both Malmö Arena and the Baltic hall have excellent locations for traveling by public transport? Malmö Arena is located right outside of Hyllie Station, which is only two stops from Malmö Central Station, while the Baltic hall instead is a short bus ride away from the central station. There are also good opportunities to travel to Malmö by public transport from several parts of Sweden and Europe – the direct trains from Stockholm or Gothenburg to Malmö have several departures every day, and from Copenhagen, Malmö Arena is less than 30 minutes away by train!
    • If you stay overnight in Malmö, choose an environmentally friendly hotel: Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city, so it does perhaps not come as a surprise that the number of hotels to choose between are many. Choose an environmentally friendly accommodation during your stay! You can find these by, for instance, looking for environmentally certified or eco-labeled hotels.
    • Sort your waste in the arena in the designated waste sorting bins: It should be easy to sort your waste – therefore, you’ll find a variety of sorting bins for different types of waste in the arenas. Do the environment a favor and sort your waste in the right place!

Thank you for your participation in creating a more sustainable event!

  • THE TOURNAMENT

The final round will be played with 16 teams divided into four groups. In the group stage each team plays each other once, while the second stage includes play-offs and placement matches.

The two best teams of group A and B go directly to the quarter final. Teams placed 3rd and 4th in group A and B and the teams placed 1st and 2nd in group C and D make it to the first play-off round (played before the quarter finals).
