Allt startade med ”You Can Play These Songs with Chords”; ett soloprojekt av sångaren och gitarristen Ben Gibbard som kom ut under sommaren 1997. När Bens musik visade sig bli väldigt omtyckt tog han stöd av basisten Nick Harmer, gitarristen Chris Walla och trummisen Nathan Good för att starta Death Cab for Cutie.

Medlemmarna skulle sedan bytas ut och bandets grund består idag av Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer och Jason McGerr. En trio som nominerats till Grammy Award för skivan ”Plans”, hamnat etta på Billboard 200 med ”Narrow Stairs” och fått en hel del publicitet genom tv-program som ”OC” och ”Six Feet Under” där de haft med sin musik.
